The Confident, Powerful Player Wears Navy Sweatbands

Navy blue isn’t just for those who go to sea. It is popular with those who go to basketball courts, football stadiums, soccer fields, hockey arenas and baseball diamonds. Navy blue is everywhere, not just on sports headbands. It is a solid color that says you’re responsible and deep.

Ahoy, matey! Here is a closer look at the many meanings of navy sweatbands and other gear and clothing.

What Is Navy?

Navy blue is a very dark shade of blue. It was originally called marine blue in the British Royal Navy. But in 1840 the name became navy blue. Now navies all over the world use the color for their uniforms.

And navy academies around the world use it for their sports teams. Gear shops at these schools sell a lot of navy basketball headbands and other types of navy headbands.

It was first used as the name of a color, navy blue, in 1840. But the term navy blue actually appeared in the Oxford English Dictionary in 1813, though it’s not clear what it was referring to if it wasn’t a color.

What the military isn’t tell you though is that this whole uniform thing is a lie, folks. The color the U.S. Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy are actually black. They did it because it doesn’t fade like navy blue. But probably navy black just doesn’t sound right. The Canadian Forces Dress Instructions call navy blue a tone of black. That would certainly surprise color purists.

Navy is considered a cool color but it is also used as a neutral for backgrounds by designers.

Navy and Variations

Navy is itself a shade of blue, but it also has its own variations.

  • Bright navy blue is the color used by Crayola crayons, part of the official pantheon since 1958.
  • Indigo dye is actually the source of marine or navy blue. Indigo is a plant that supplied the dye for all those uniforms. In the 1700s, 1800s and 1900s, the navies of the world used many shades of navy blue. The color they got depended on how much indigo blue they used to color the cloth.
  • Purple navy is navy with a dash of red, giving it a strong purple look. Some navies currently use this shade for their uniforms. The term was coined in 1926.
  • Persian indigo is a darker shade of Persian blue. In the past it was called regimental because it was used on navy uniforms, a highly regimented branch of the service.
  • Space cadet is a real color, folks. It is very popular in New Zealand and Australia. Not sure if it says something about the culture Down Under. The name Space Cadet was first used in 2007, but the dark shade of navy was in use before then. How was it named? Someone tried to figure out what color cadets in a navy training program conducted in outer space would wear. This is what they came up with. True, that’s how it got named.

The Psychology of Navy

Regular blue is the color of trustworthiness and security. Navy blue is more conservative, appearing very calm and cool. But underneath, the color can indicate worry and repressed emotions.

Navy blue is the color of compassion that is felt but not expressed openly. It is considered the uber-masculine color, a powerful force. It is the shade that represents knowledge and integrity.

Unlike sky blue, navy blue can indicate pessimism. It can be a threatening color, unlike azure blue and other shades. The power of navy must be harnessed and used for good, which is where its native integrity comes to the rescue.

Navy is the color of stability, authority and confidence. That is why it is often seen on people with power, like the military and the police.

Navy and Your Personality

If you choose navy, you are intelligent and confident. You may have trouble expressing your warmer emotions, but that doesn't mean you don’t have them. You may not tell someone you feel for them, but you are likely to actually do something to make their life easier.

The person who chooses a navy knows she is important and has a serious role to play on a team, committee or in another type of group. This person is naturally stable and conservative.

Navy and What You Wear

People who choose standard blue clothing tend to be creative. If they choose darker blues, like navy, they are saying they are creative, but also smart and powerful. They are people who think for themselves and look at the world with an independent eye.

Dark blue suits are the uniform of choice for the upper classes and those that want to be seen as such. These are the people referred to as “the suits,” especially by many in the movie and television industry.

Blue bloods are the upper crust. Perhaps they choose navy blue suits to protect their blue blood and remind them what color it is. In the Middle Ages, the royals spread the myth that their blood was a different color than that of the riff raff, who had garish red blood. True royals had tasteful navy blue blood.

Navy and Sports

Truly, if you choose navy gear like navy wrist sweatbands, you are in good company. There are hundreds of colleges, universities and professional teams worldwide that incorporate this color in their uniforms.

The great and the good who go to the University of Oxford in England use dark blue as their color to distinguish them during their annual boat race on the Thames. The students of Oxford are called dark blues.

In addition, regular players on a wide variety of teams use navy blue. Soccer clubs range from the Falkirk Football Club, the Paris Saint-Germain Football Club, Genoa C.F.C., Melbourne Victory to the U.S. men’s and women’s national teams.

The National Basketball Association is awash in navy blue. Teams that use it include the Atlanta Hawks, Indiana Pacers, New Orleans Pelicans and the Utah Jazz.

National Football League teams with navy in their colors include the Chicago Bears, New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks.

Teams in the National Hockey League using it include the Buffalo Sabres, Edmonton Oilers, Nashville Predators and of course, the St. Louis Blues.

Baseball teams include the Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays and the Seattle Mariners.
